Tabassum Khanum

Community Correspondent Tabassum Khanum is from Kupwara District where she heads the All J&K Pasmanda Tabkajat Welfare Society. The militancy and high presence of the Indian army have had the worst effect on the lives of women and children. Most have gone unreported—the gang rape in Kunanposhpora is one of the rare instances that got reported from the region. Through her organisation Tabassum is working to bring these women to justice; she is involved in rehabilitation work with survivors of gender violence; half widows (women uncertain if their husbands are alive) and widows. As a Community Correspondent she hopes to build on the limited narratives on these issues; to make more people aware of the human rights abuses suffered in the region.
