Community Correspondent Hari Shankar Behara belongs to the Dalit community of Kushmil village in Odisha’s Balangir district. After having struggled to complete his education, his joy was cut short when an accident side-lined him and he had to withdraw from the position he held in the maintenance department of a major mining corporation. During the forced sabbatical that followed, he got involved with organizations which are devoted to uplifting the Dalit community and through them discovered what it is like to be involved in social work. Shortly thereafter, he found himself deeply involved in the struggle to bring justice to the victims of casteism and indiscriminate mining operations. At Video Volunteers, Hari wants to use his involvement with the media to bring more of his community’s problems to the attention of the rest of the world, while also tackling the issues of displacement that pose a constant threat to the survival of his people.
