ASHA workers of Madhya Pradesh were on a strike for over a month demanding better pay and working conditions for them. Throughout the COVID scare, ASHAs have worked without PPE kits and face masks. An ASHA worker from Madhya Pradesh makes only Rs. 32 for a day's work while an ASHA associate earns Rs. 16 per day.
This is inhumane as an ASHA worker from neighboring states like Andhra Pradesh earn Rs. 10,000 monthly. Similarly, wages of other states like Kerala, Haryana and Delhi are significantly higher. Yet, the MP government has virtually ignored the working conditions of ASHAs.
The Community Correspondent (CC) Harishankar reports that 35 families had their job cards made 10 years ago and due to non - renewal of these cards, they are not getting any MGNREGA jobs.
