Mumbai's municipal body, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has allegedly destroyed more than 60 shanties in the suburban Govandi area. Residents allege that the demolotion was carried out without any prior notice or warning and has rendered them homeless overnight.
The residents say that BMC is constructing a drainage system in the area. The shanties were obstructing the construction and hence were cleared. Many residents claimed to the Video Volunteers community correspondent Amol Lalzare that they were misled into vacating their homes minutes before the demolition was carried out. This has caused mental harrassment and monetary losses to the residents. No compensation has been disbursed yet by the authorities.
Stand with the shanties of Govandi and call on the number at the end of the video to help them get justice!
