Innocent shot dead by the J&K police, family awaits justice

Farooq Ahmed Rather was killed on 25th of June 2008, when police fired indiscriminately on a peaceful protest in Mazhama village of district Budgam. He was standing near the window inside his house, some 100 yards away from the spot of the protest, when he was shot. His family immediately rushed him to the hospital but was stopped by police on the way and demanded Farooq be handed over to them. He died en route to the hospital. The innocence of the deceased has been confirmed by a number of documents and even the police admitted to it later. The accused in this murder have been declared untraced.

The police has shut down the investigations and the government has not provided any relief despite a recommendation by the State Human Rights Commission. The family of the victim accuses constable Jarnail Singh for Farooq's death and has now approached the High Court.
