To accommodate the world's second largest population is a mammoth task. The Indian Government has many welfare schemes to provide accommodations, importantly, providing housing to the economically weak sections. Still there is a huge gap between the demand and supply of the houses and that results in growing slums in cities and the people living in unhygienic conditions.
Housing connotes a host of other activities apart from dwelling, it talks about hygienic ways of living, access to clean drinking water, sanitation, sewage, and other basic amenities. It is a complex structure consisting of different settlement variables. To establish a Housing Board in India is never easy as it needs extensive preparations and coordinations of various departments.
In Jharkhand's Bokaro district, in Gomia block, East Sasbeda panchayat, the tenants of Housing Board are facing a problem of evictions. People have been living there for more than 25 years, without any record except their rent receipts. Government wants them to vacate their houses, a total of 57 houses, and they have a court order with them to let the tenants go out of the Housing Board premises. The tenants are requesting the government that they can pay a higher rent but not to evict them. Our Community Correspondent Goreti Kujur is talking to the tenants and the Housing Board officials to find an amicable solution. Hope both the Government officials and the Tenants Union can come to a negotiated approach.
