CV Camp update: How do college students feel about learning with Producers?

Creative Camera Students

Naomi Hatfield Allen, an intern with VV from Cambridge University, interviews three participants at VV Community Video Camp in August 2009

Melissa from Australia What is your background and why are you here? I'm doing my final year of social work and am in India to do an internship with Laya. I am interested in youth work and in using media to enable communities to bring awareness to themselves and others.

Can you tell me what the creative camera workshop was about? It equipped us with basic skills to shoot creative shots - creating an awareness of lighting and depth; encouraging us to visualize through film.

And do you have a highlight or anecdote from the workshop? I never thought I would act in a cheesy romance beach scene in India!

And what about the future? The creativity of people here has really inspired me to look into community video further as it seems to be a great way to engage communities.

Sonali from Bangalore What is your background and why are you here? I am in my final year of my graphic art degree and I am going to pursue film in my masters so this is good exposure.

Can you tell me what the creative camera workshop was about? Visualising in still and then applying that to film - using the camera to create creative images.

And do you have a highlight or anecdote from the workshop? My favourite exercise was creating a sequence of six still shots to tell a story. It was interesting to see the quality of work produced in 45 minutes - as long as you have inspiration! I also learnt about the rule of thirds and also changes in focus.

And what about the future? Community video seems to be the most productive form of filmmaking as it gives a definite message. It is also the most challenging as you work with a diverse range of people but definitely something I want to look into further.

Utpal from Assam What is your background and why are you here? I have finished my undergraduate degree in animation and I am a movie buff interested in special effects - I want to make films!

Can you tell me what the creative camera workshop was about? Forming highly unconventional camera angles which create aesthetically pleasing frames.

And do you have a highlight or anecdote from the workshop? The whole workshop was a learning curve as there were so many things I had not heard of before.

And what about the future?

I want to work giving a voice to people who desperately need it - earlier I wanted to be a big shot film director but now I want to be a social media entrepreneur.
